BRK Electronics were instrumental in the design of the first patented battery operated smoke alarm in 1965. During the early 1970′s, the intense development due the success of these alarms; produced more affordable, high quality AC and battery smoke alarm systems to be used in new construction and mobile homes across the country.

In 1974, Sears, Roebuck and Company put its name on a BRK Electronics battery-operated smoke alarms. With its popularity on the rise with consumers, the Sears branded smoke alarm began prompting other manufacturers to enter the residential smoke detector market.

In 1976, BRK had then introduced the First Alert brand battery operated smoke alarms to the public. With its low cost, long lasting alarms, the sales of First Alert products had become a major part in the overall growth of the BRK Electronic brand. First Alert, together with BRK brand alarms sold primarily to electrical contractors, combined to make BRK Electronics the leading manufacturer of residential alarms.

BRK Electronics has since expanded their line of home safety and security products: including flash lights in 1985, disposable fire extinguishers in 1986, a line of home security lighting products in 1992 and a carbon monoxide alarm in 1993.
